A Gentle Goodbye: Peaceful End-Of-Life Care For Pets

Saying goodbye to a beloved dog or cat is never easy; it’s one of the most emotionally challenging moments a pet parent can face. As a provider of compassionate dog and cat euthanasia, our role is to first help pet parents get clarity—and when it’s time to say goodbye, we’re here to offer support.

WHEN ITS TIME?

Dog & Cat Euthanasia: When Is It Time?

At a certain point, pet parents might consider pet euthanasia as an option, or it may be suggested by a veterinarian in some cases. The next key step is getting certainty about whether or not to choose euthanasia for dogs and cats. When is it really time to say goodbye? Here are some important factors:

You Don’t Have to Decide Alone

Through this challenging journey, we’re here with you. The decision to avail of end-of-life care for your pet isn’t a burden you’ll need to carry alone. Our vets will guide you and provide emotional support resources that can help.

Evaluating Your Pet’s Quality of Life

Changes like loss of appetite, mobility issues, changes in bathroom habits, cognitive dysfunction, and unmanageable pain signal a decline in your dog’s or cat’s quality of life. At Sploot, we help pet parents assess these signs, drawing from our experience and expertise.

Chronic Suffering & Eventual Passing Away

In cases of terminal illness or chronic pain, and when palliative treatments can no longer bring relief, helping your pet pass peacefully may be the kindest path. We’re here to help you understand when that time might come, with honesty and sensitivity.

DURING

What to Expect During the Appointment

At Sploot Veterinary Care, we bring compassion to every aspect of what we do, including our cat and dog euthanasia services in Denver, Chicago, & Colorado Springs. We offer:

A Calm, Private Space

We make intentional accommodations for pet euthanasia services. The space is thoughtfully prepared to be as private, quiet, and peaceful as possible. Take your time and have meaningful final moments with your beloved companion in a setting that feels safe.

A Gentle Explanation of The Euthanasia Process

Our team will then explain our compassionate euthanasia process. Sedation is provided for a stress-free transition before the final infection is administered. The process is painless and peaceful. You can either be present or step away—whichever feels right.

Support All Throughout

We’ll be there to support you before, during, and after the pet euthanasia process. We can also provide you with keepsakes to commemorate your pet, such as paw prints or fur clippings. We can also provide resources for grief support, pet hotlines, and pet memorial ideas.

1. Clinical Evaluation for Dog & Cat Skin Issues

For all dog and cat skin issues, we start with a clinical evaluation or physical exam. In cases where the symptoms point to a definite cause, this step is enough to determine the best treatment for your dog or cat.

2 Pet Diagnostics for Skin Problems

When symptoms are overlapping or indefinite, guesswork is not an option. Our vets may recommend diagnostics to accurately determine the root cause of your dog’s or cat’s skin issues.

Pet diagnostics for skin-related problems can include:

  • Bloodwork – to rule out systemic issues which can contribute to skin problems (e.g, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease)
  • Skin scraping, cytology or biopsies – for intense itching and hair loss
  • Wood’s Lamp exam and PCR testing – for suspected ringworm infections
  • Bacterial or fungal cultures – for determining the cause of skin infections and direct specific therapies

3. Testing for Allergies in Dogs & Cats

Because allergies in dogs and cats are so common, we may discuss allergy testing for your pet, especially if the itching, dermatitis, and recurrent ear infections cannot be tied to any other cause or empirical therapy is not improving these signs.

Allergy testing in dogs and cats comes in two forms:

  • Intradermal skin testing – typically recommended when the suspected allergy may be seasonal or environmental. This test involves the injection of small amounts of common allergens on a patch of skin to observe the reactions in a controlled setting.
  • Food trials – typically recommended when cat or dog food allergies are suspected. This test can last 6 to 8 weeks, with a series of strict dietary recommendations to deduce the food allergen involved by a process of elimination.

4. Treatment for Cat & Dog Skin Issues

You can count on our veterinarians in Denver, Colorado Springs, and Chicago to provide your pet with the personalized treatment plan that works best for their case. This can include:

  • Oral medication – used to manage inflammation, itching, and widespread bacterial or fungal infections.
  • Topical treatments – can include creams, sprays, or ointments to soothe irritation or a localized skin infection.
  • Medicated baths – can be recommended for treating mites or severe fungal infections. These can also be supportive treatment for itching and contact allergies.
  • Prescribed shampoos – veterinary-grade formulations can help soothe inflammation or widespread bacterial or fungal skin infections.
  • Anti-tick or anti-flea prescriptions – oral medications or topical spot-on treatments that eliminate existing flea or tick infestations and provide preventive protection.
  • Allergy treatments – oral antihistamines, apoquel chews or cytopoint injections (for dogs only), and prescription diets can be recommended, depending on your pet’s case.

Erica N.

"What a great experience! We were floored with our first visit. A refreshingly modern and pup-first approach to pet care. Dr Jake was a dog whisperer in getting our sometimes (okay always) ornery Bernedoodle to relax for a shot...The digital scheduling and billing makes logistics a cinch- will be recommending Sploot to all of our pup Scout’s friends!"

Adam K.

"The most friendly staff, beautiful facilities, I know that my labradoodle is in the best hands!"

Samantha M.

My pup Theo had a great experience at Sploot!  Dr. Alexa and Dr. Jake were super nice and put Theo at ease right away (he doesn't love vets).  Their convenient hours made it incredibly easy for me to go after work - and plus, the beautifully designed clinic made going to the vet a totally different experience for me and Theo!  He really enjoyed choosing from the treat / toy / sunglasses bar and walked away a happy pup.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I know when it’s time to consider euthanasia for my pet?

Signs like unmanageable pain, difficulty walking, loss of appetite, frequent accidents, or confusion may suggest a decline in quality of life. Our veterinarians can help assess these signs and guide you with compassion and clarity.

What happens during a pet euthanasia appointment?

The process begins with a gentle sedative to help your pet relax. Once they’re peacefully asleep, a second medication is administered to help them pass painlessly. You’re welcome to stay with your pet throughout, or step away if that feels better.

Is pet euthanasia painful for my dog or cat?

No. When performed by trained veterinary professionals, euthanasia is a peaceful, pain-free process. Pets are fully sedated and calm before the final injection is given.

What happens to my pet’s remains after euthanasia?

We offer aftercare options, including private and communal cremation. You can also choose keepsakes like a paw print or fur clipping, and we’ll walk you through memorial options with dignity and care.

Can I talk to a vet before deciding on euthanasia?

Absolutely. You don’t have to make this decision alone. We offer consultations to help you understand your options and evaluate your pet’s condition with support and empathy.
