For the vast majority of pets, yes. We run pre-anesthetic bloodwork and an exam first, use modern monitoring throughout, and tailor the plan to your pet's age and health. We're happy to talk through any concerns at your consultation.

Yes, dogs and cats can get cavities. It's one of the common dental problems we find. Acidic plaque wears down the enamel and creates decay, just like in people. However, the most common dental problem is still periodontal disease, a progressive gum infection that affects a large percentage of dogs and cats beyond the age of 3. Professional teeth cleaning for dogs and cats helps prevent dental issues, including periodontal disease and cavities, by removing disease-causing plaque.

You get one all-inclusive estimate up front, including the consultation, pre-anesthetic bloodwork, full cleaning and polish, and digital X-rays. Dog dentals start around $690 all-in for SplootPack members in Colorado, and cat dentals around $650 (use the pricing toggle in the pricing table above for Illinois and Utah rates). If X-rays reveal a tooth that needs treatment, we call you with the cost before doing anything.

An awake (anesthesia-free) cleaning only provides cosmetic benefits; it can't reach below the gumline and does not include diagnostic dental X-rays. These procedures are also NOT done by licensed professionals, are stressful for dogs and cats, and have a high risk of physical injury from scalers and other dental tools.

On the other hand, anesthetic dental cleaning for cats and dogs cleans above AND below the gumline, while keeping pets comfortable. As the gold standard in veterinary dentistry, anesthetic teeth cleaning offers actual oral health benefits, which can range from early detection and treatment to halting or managing various stages of periodontal disease.

We won't know for certain until your pet is under anesthesia and we can take the dental X-rays. Only then can we see hidden fractures, abscesses, and bone loss from periodontal disease. If a tooth is causing pain or cannot be saved, we will call you during the procedure and only proceed with your OK.

At-home brushing is genuinely valuable and slows plaque between visits, but it can't remove tartar below the gumline or reach where disease develops (at the root). It works alongside a professional dental cleaning, not in place of one.
