Sometimes the X-rays reveal a tooth that needs more than a cleaning. If they do, here's what treatment can involve.
Tooth extractions
For decay, fractured or loose teeth, retained baby teeth, or teeth too damaged to save — removed gently, with the socket cared for afterward.
Gingivectomy
Careful removal of diseased gum tissue to manage advanced periodontal disease and give healthy gums a chance to recover.

Every dental starts with a consultation. We examine your pet's mouth, check that they're healthy enough for anesthesia, and run pre-anesthetic bloodwork — then give you an estimate based on what we find.
Bloodwork is required before we schedule the procedure. Once your pet is cleared, the full picture of what's needed comes together during the cleaning, when the X-rays tell us what's happening below the gumline.

For the vast majority of pets, yes. We run pre-anesthetic bloodwork and an exam first, use modern monitoring throughout, and tailor the plan to your pet's age and health. We're happy to talk through any concerns at your consultation.
They can — it's one of the more common things we find. Acidic plaque wears down the enamel and creates decay, just like in people. Cavities, along with gingivitis and periodontal disease, are exactly what a professional cleaning and X-rays are designed to catch.
Most dogs and cats benefit from a professional cleaning about once a year, though it varies with breed, age, and home care. Small and flat-faced breeds often need them more often — your vet will recommend a cadence after the exam.
You get one all-inclusive estimate up front — consultation, pre-anesthetic bloodwork, full cleaning and polish, and digital X-rays. If X-rays reveal a tooth that needs treatment, we call you with the cost before doing anything.
An awake (anesthesia-free) cleaning only scrapes the visible surface of the tooth — it can't reach below the gumline, can't take X-rays, and can be stressful for your pet. An anesthetic cleaning treats the whole mouth safely and thoroughly. It looks similar from the outside, but only one actually addresses disease where it starts.
We won't know for certain until your pet is under anesthesia and we can see the X-rays — that's when hidden fractures, abscesses, and bone loss become visible. If a tooth is causing pain or can't be saved, we call you during the procedure and only proceed with your OK.
At-home brushing is genuinely valuable and slows plaque between visits — but it can't remove tartar below the gumline or reach where disease develops. It works alongside a professional cleaning, not instead of one.
